Hours & Duration Calculator

Find the time between two moments, or add and subtract hours and minutes.

In short

The duration between two times is the exact hours and minutes separating them. Enter a start and end date-and-time and this calculator returns the gap in hours and minutes, an H:MM figure and decimal hours — handling overnight and multi-day spans — and can also add or subtract time.

Hours & Duration

Time between two moments

Hours and minutes between two times

The hours calculator measures the exact time duration between two moments — the same day or across several days — and can also add or subtract hours and minutes from a starting time. Use the date-and-time pickers so overnight shifts and multi-day spans are handled correctly, with no confusion over AM/PM.

It’s the tool for working out the length of a shift, a flight, a study session, a fast, a parking stay or a project sprint. The result is shown several ways: total hours and minutes, an H:MM figure, and a decimal-hours value that’s handy for timesheets and billing.

Example: A shift from 22:00 to 06:30 the next morning is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 decimal hours.

Why use date-and-time inputs

Entering only clock times makes overnight spans ambiguous — is 06:00 to 22:00 sixteen hours, or is it the other way around? By including the date, the calculator always knows which moment comes first, so it measures the real gap and never has to guess.

FAQ

Common questions

How many hours are between two times?
Choose “duration between two times”, pick a start and end date-and-time, and the calculator shows the exact hours and minutes, an H:MM figure and a decimal-hours value.
Does it handle overnight and multi-day spans?
Yes. Because you enter both the date and the time, spans that cross midnight or run over several days are measured correctly with no AM/PM confusion.
Can I add or subtract hours from a time?
Yes. Switch to “add / subtract time”, enter a start date-and-time and the hours and minutes to add or subtract, and it returns the resulting date and time.
What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour — for example 90 minutes is 1.5 hours. It’s the format most timesheets and billing systems expect. To total a week of shifts, use the time card calculator.
